Carol just celebrated her twentieth birthday. On the day of her birthday, she went out to lunch with her best friend Tina. Carol had planned to spend a quiet evening at home by herself. She didn't want to have a party, but Tina talked her into having her friends and parents over. After lunch, Carol went back to work. Her boss wished her a happy birthday and gave her a beautiful bouquet of flowers. When she got off work, she called up a few of her friends and invited them over to celebrate. Her father and mother stopped by before all of the other guests were supposed to come. Her mother baked a cake and her father cooked dinner. Carol just sat on her comfortable sofa and watched them. In the end, it was the best birthday she had ever had.

1. 介紹動詞talk, say 及 speak 的用法
a. tell作及物動詞，表“告訴 ”、“叫”、“講”，用于下列結(jié)構：
tell sb + that 從句 告訴某人……
tell sb sth 告訴某人某事
tell sb to V 叫某人從事……
tell sb (sth) about...告訴某人有關……的事情
tell a lie / a story / a joke（lies / stories / jokes）講謊話/故事/笑話
tell (sb) the truth(向某人)說實話
To tell (you) the truth,...老實(對你)說，……
例：
John told me that he was so ill that he wasn't able to attend the meeting.
約翰告訴我他很不舒服因此無法參加會議。
I told him to go back home and take a good rest.
我叫他回家好好休息。
Peter never tells anyone (anything) abou this family.
彼得從不向人提及他的家庭。
My cousin David is good at telling stories /jokes.
我表弟戴維很會說故事 ∕ 笑話。
I don't trust Bill because he often tells lies.

To tell (you) the truth, I don't like those friends of yours.

b. talk 多作不及物動詞，表“講話”。
例：
Stop talking, everyone. The teacher is coming.

John talks a lot. He is indeed a windbag.
約翰話真多。他真是個長舌公。
talk 亦可與介詞 about 并用，表"談論"。

注意： talk 亦可作及物動詞，表"說服"，采下列結(jié)構：
talk sb into V-ing 說服某人從事……
= persuade sb to V
talk sb out of V-ing 說服某人不要……
= dissuade sb from V-ing
I felt very happy when I successfully talked Dad into quitting smoking.
= I felt very happy when I successfully persuaded Dad to quit smoking.
我成功說服老爸戒煙時，感到很高興。
I don't think I can talk my daughter out of going out with her new
boyfriend.
= I don't think I can dissuade my daughter from going out with her new boyfriend.
我想我無法說服我女兒不要與她新男友來往。
c. speak 作及物動詞，表"說"（某種語言）
例：John speaks German very well.
約翰德語說得很好。
How many languages do you speak?
你會操幾種語言。
注意：
1) speak 亦可作不及物動詞，表"談話"，此時與 talk 用法相同：
What are you guys speaking about?
= What are you guys talking about?
你們大家正在談些什么？
2) speak 亦可作電話用語，有下列用法：
A：Hello. Who's speaking, please?
B：Hi: this is John Smith (speaking). Is Mary there?
A：Hold on, please.
甲：哈啰。請問您是哪一位？
乙：嗨：我是約翰?史密斯。瑪麗在嗎？
甲：請稍候。
3) 要某人提高音量時，亦可使用 speak。
例：I can't hear you. Can you speak louder?
我聽不見你的聲音。你可否說大聲點？
4) speaking 亦可與副詞并用，形成下列固定短語，置句首：
Generally speaking, women are more conservative than men.
一般而言，女人比男人保守。
Frankly speaking, you are not my cup of tea.
坦白說，你不是我喜歡的那一類型。
d. say 作及物動詞，表"說"，一般用 something、nothing、a few words that 從句、直接引句（"..."）作賓語。
例：John said something(which) I didn't understand.
= John said a few words (which) I didn't understand.
約翰說了一些我聽不懂的話。
When I asked Peter what he would do this weekend, he said, "I just want to stay home listening to music."
= When I asked Peter what he would do this weekend, he said that he just wanted to stay home listening to music."
我問彼得這個周末他想做什么事時，他說："我只想待在家里聽音樂。"
= 我問彼得這個周末他想做什么事時，他說他只想待在家里聽音樂。
2. 本課第四句即使用 "talk sb into V-ing"（說服某人從事……）的結(jié)構：
...but Tina talked her into having her friends and parents over.
……但是蒂娜說服她邀她的朋友和父母親過來。
